…The Nigeria Police Conspiracy

Billionaire businesswoman, Oyinda Adeyemi, is too rich to howl. But it hurts too much for the StillEarth Group CEO to wave off the wilful and painful malfeasance and betrayal by her employees and the Nigeria Police with a shrug. Before they met their comeuppance, Rose Patrick, 25, was the trusted housekeeper who knew the nooks and crannies of Oyin’s stately home while Mohammed Abdulazeez was her driver; the one madam literally entrusted her life into his hands.

Around December 2016, Oyin, according to court papers sighted by The Capital, discovered that expensive jewelleries including a set of Roberto Coin Gold set valued at $15, 000, and a set of Van Clef Diamond and Gold Butterfly jewellery valued at $50, 000, a dangling gold jewellery set valued at $50, 000, a set of black and white diamonds valued at $75, 000, a plain gold set valued at $15, 000, a big set of gold and diamond encrusted pendant valued at $50, 000 as well as other valuable personal and household items such as an iPad, three Blackberry mobile phones and six Ankara fabrics among others.

Busy Oyin probably would not have noticed early until Rose, who was supposed to return from her holiday, stayed an extra two weeks without recourse to her madam. In the intervening period, Oyin discovered the degree of larceny that had taken place in her home. And she raised the alarm. Rose was consequently arrested at the home of her boyfriend, one Cpl. Mathias Hussein, a mobile policeman of Mopol 43, Lion Building, Obalende, Lagos. Police investigations also revealed that the driver and one Esther Pam, Rose’s friend and a domestic staff at a nearby house, had aided Rose in stealing the items in suitcases. Some of the stolen items were recovered from the Mobile Police Barracks Obalende, Lagos, residence of her police boyfriend.

Thereafter, Rose, Mohammed and Esther, were arraigned at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing N150million worth of jewellery, which they denied. In her ruling, the Magistrate, Mrs Y.O. Aje-Afunwa granted each of the accused N2million bail with two sureties each in like sum. She also said that the sureties must be homeowners who must provide evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government. She adjourned the case until Oct. 17 for trial.

Curiously, Oyin’s counsel, Kennedy Osunwa, said, “The police are yet to charge and arraign Cpl. Mathias Hussein, for conspiracy and retention of stolen property in his official residence.” Why the cover up? Is this a case of esprit de corps?

While Oyin is still mulling over her losses and especially by the conspiratorial silence of the police hierarchy, she has told close friends that she is fed up of being misrepresented as the wife of Nigerian soccer legend, Segun Odegbami. Indeed, Oyin and Odegbami were an item for a long time but called it quits few months after their engagement some years ago. The Capital findings revealed that their love turned sour soon after they discovered that beneath their heartfelt display of passion and attraction to each other, they actually vibrated on separate wavelengths.
