The 19 northern governors on Friday met in Kaduna  over the growing security problems  and Almajiri menace  in the  North.

The  Northern Governors Forum therefore  set up a Committee on Insecurity in the North headed by Katsina State Governor Aminu Masari  to find solutions  to the issue.

The governors also resolved to meet  with President Muhammadu Buhari on the best way  possible to tackle insecurity in the region.

These were part of communiqué read by the forum’s Chairman and Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima at the end of the meeting at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim Government House, Kaduna.

Meanwhile,  Plateau State Governor Simon Lalong  has emerged as  Shettima’s successor.

The Borno governor’s  four-year tenure ends on May 29.

Shettima  will be representing Borno Central in the 9th National Assembly.

Shettima of the  All Progressives Congress  took over from former Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu in 2015.

The  communiqué read in part, “The forum deliberated extensively on the nature of  insecurity currently bedevilling the region and  the various ways and means of dealing with the situation.

“In order to tackle the challenges holistically, the forum set up a committee under the chairmanship of the Governor of Katsina State, Alhaji Aminu B Masari, to,  inter alia,  develop a comprehensive regional plan of action that could bring lasting solutions to the lingering crises.”

The forum also appointed a former Economic Adviser to  the late President Umaru Yar’Adua as chairman of  the New Nigeria Development Company.

It  also set up a committee under  Jigawa State Governor Abubakar Badaru to study the current structure of the NNDC and come up with a road map on how best to resuscitate the company to meet its  objectives.

While fielding questions from reporters after reading the communiqué, Shettima  said  although the forum was not opposed to  the Almajiri system in the region,  it would  focus on providing  quality education for all children  in the North.

According to him, the  forum  has resolved to provide  infrastructure, teachers and teaching aids to give children of the poor education in the region.

Shettima  thanked his colleagues for  supporting him,  urging  them to extend same to  his successor.
