When the going was good, former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode would hardly do without the professorial counsel and company of his friend, Prof Ademola Abass.

They were like two peas in a pod, always sticking close and breaking juicy bread together. Before being appointed as the Special Adviser to the Governor of Lagos State on Overseas Affairs and Investment, Prof Abass, who was educated at the universities of Lagos, Nottingham and Cambridge where he obtained a PhD in International Law, previously taught law in various British universities and was Professor of International Law and Organisation.

He had also worked for the United Nations in Belgium as Head of Peace and Security Programme and was African Union’s first Expert on Regional Mechanisms; a Consultant to various international organisations including the UN, ECOWAS, and the European Union and regularly advises States, International organisations and Non-Governmental organisations on International Law and Peace and Security.

By virtue of his closeness to the former governor, Prof Abass made tons of money. In fact, many allege that he is one of the biggest beneficiaries of the past administration, living the lush life reminiscent of an oil sheikh.

Coming into such humongous money came with a change of lifestyle for the otherwise austere academic as he became the cock of the walk, the life of the party and a veritable ladies’ man. Top society women fawned over him while men adored him because of his closeness to power and lucre. When he celebrated his 50th birthday last year at the Sky Lounge of the Eko Hotel, some of the guests included Prof Wole Soyinka, Prof Pat Utomi; the German Consul-General in Lagos, Mr. Ingo Herbert; and the Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun, among other prominent Nigerians. Though Ambode was not present, some of his aides were very conspicuous.

However, since the former governor was denied a second term ticket and the subsequent expiration of his four year-term, Prof Abass has simply disappeared into thin air. Like Ambode who has virtually relocated to Dubai, nothing has been heard from Prof Abass since his friend left government house.
