*Love Actually, As Beautiful Wife, Omowunmi, Serenades Him

His smile, with an extensive grin, brings clinch from narrow to vast, on the best of his great days. Hence as DIG Taiwo Lakanu clocked 60 some days ago and retired after 33 years of active service in the Nigeria Police Force, his trademark smile cast an expansive pall of warmth, and he wore it so well beaming radiantly, like an eternal sun ray on a field of daffodils.

The Akogun of Lagos beamed generously and laughed heartily, bathing his beloved family and friends with gratitude and warmth, as the soothing breeze courses through windswept rivers of hyacinths.

As he clocked 60, friends and family of the Lakanus trooped out to honour him with felicitations and their presence at the prestigious Red Carpet Hall, Oniru, Victoria Island, Lagos – hardly anyone would dispute that he deserved such honour. And the reason is not farfetched.; Akogun Lakanu has overtime carved his niche in the public and social spaces, a super cop of immense worth. His place in the pantheon of Nigeria’s most successful policemen undoubtedly assured by the impact of his earthly endeavours.

As he made his grand entry into the league of sexagenarians, the evidently gracious policeman enjoyed the undisguised love and goodwill of friends, family and business associates. There was so much joy in his household and workplace; though not one to throw gaudy parties, he yielded to the plea of family and friends that he ditched his conservative toga for once, and celebrate without inhibitions.

Of course, he won’t turn 60 twice, and this was the reason his wife and children, threw a big bash for him. It was classy affair that attracted the creme of Nigeria’s high society in attendance. Good food and expensive drinks were in large supply and the celebrant cut a radiant sight, looking regal by the side of his wife of many years.

It was a great party and an undeniable testament to the celebrant’s worth as a true man of the people. At the high-octane event, politicians shook hands with corporate players, top bankers embraced top celebrities, former governors and incumbent governors back slapped, and everyone wore a happy smile as they ate and drank. The music was the way he loves it – bluesy and mid-tempo. All through the party, Lakanu wore a permanent smile as he intermittently hi-fived and gisted with guests, while nibbling and having a good time.

Every guest was given the royalty treatment; they were all treated to the choicest brands of champagne; from Ace of spade, Don-Perignon, Crystal and Cognac to Moet & Chandon. Asides the assorted liquor, beer and fruit juices, the guests were also treated to delicious finger foods and dessert that sufficiently wet their palates and sated them.

At the background, a soulful medley of very old and contemporary music wafted from well-appointed woofers causing the guests to sway, shuffle and waltz as much as the music moved them and transported them to euphoric cusps.

However, the centre of attraction that night was no other person than his beautiful wife, Omowunmi who bowled everyone over at the event with her infectious candor and charisma as she serenaded her husband with beautiful love songs. People who know her well never got tired of purring odes about her on account of her humility. She is truly a good wife indeed.

Yes, Akogun epitomises merit and affluence with indescribable allure. He’s got a heart of gold too.
Lakanu is astoundingly generous too. He lives to improve the lot of others, the underprivileged in particular hence the contents of his pockets are often emptied to better the lives of impoverished, ragged families of the boondocks.

In appreciation, Lakanu beamed with smiles and heartily hobnobbed with dignitaries and friends at his star-studded birthday.
And despite being loved and treasured by anyone, he won’t be deified by anyone simply because he succeeded in turning generosity, excellence and humaneness into an art form. But he is feted and idolized all the same. This is understandable for a man who challenged resolve with steely grit and exploited the arduous planes of ambition and toil, till he encountered grandeur at the crossroads where wild contemplation and hard work morphs into triumph.
