Effortlessly,  (Dr) Mike Adenuga Jnr, the chairman of telecommunications giant, Globacom, personifies the famous quote of Vince Lombardi that “Winning is not a sometime thing; it’s an all the time thing. You don’t win once in a while; you don’t do things right once in a while; you do them right all of the time. Winning is a habit.” Since Globacom entered the Nigerian communications field back in 2003, it has been cutting large swaths through the labyrinths of an otherwise impervious and volatile industry.

More than any other operator, Globacom has broken more grounds in the history of African mobile telephony from its early days of crashing SIM prices to introducing the Per Second Billing which the forerunners of GSM in Nigeria, MTN and ECONET (now Airtel) had coldheartedly informed Nigerians was an impracticable venture. Without a scintilla of doubt, Globacom had always defied market odds to delight Nigerians and the industry keeps showing its gratitude in different forms. Ayou would find out in this report, the outgoing year has not been any different as the brand won every available award available from Lagos to London and everywhere in between.

If Dr. Mike Adenuga Jnr. doesn’t strike you, at first sight, then possibly, he is a masterpiece of a man disguised as a blank canvas. The trillionaire businessman affects a flurry of beings curled into one: he is science, an art, a foundation of genius with dashes of brilliance brightening the creativity of his mind and soul, thus illumining the world. A product of pure intellect, vision and sheer enterprise, he can become any form he creates; he is a library of masterpieces, an intricate web of sensitivity and hope attuned in full measure to the world’s needs. This is a glimpse of who he truly is.

Dr. Adenuga does not only set high standards; he abides by the standards as a matter of exemplary leadership and integrity of character. By sheer tenacity of purpose, the man who became the first entrepreneur of Nigerian origin to explore crude oil on an industrial scale through his Consolidated Oil firm has gone ahead to finding life-liberating ventures like Globacom whichstands out and has continued to stand the test of time Through the genius of Adenuga, Glo has continued to scoop awards from within Nigeria and abroad

Unlike the proverbial prophet who has no honour among his kith and kin, ‘the Spirit of Africa’ (as fondly called by his loyalists and admirers) has never gone through a year in the past two decades without winning one award or the other. For Dr. Adenuga and the Globacom brand, winning, indeed, seems engrained in their DNA. Likewise, 2019 has been an interesting year as the company has continued to grow in measures that surpass even its managers’ projections and it is not surprising that they are ending the year, typically, on a high note.

On Tuesday, December 10, at the MUSON Centre, Onikan, Lagos, Dr. Adenuga, who holds Nigeria’s highest honour for non-government officials, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) and France’s highest national honour of Commander of the Legion of Honour, clinched Nigeria’s Outstanding and Most Innovative Entrepreneur Award’ at the Platinum Awards to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Tribune Group of Newspapers.

Speaking on the significance of the award, the management of Tribune said: “Before the advent of Globacom, the nation was told that per-second billing was not possible. But Globacom under Adenuga introduced per-second billing and forced others to join. His intervention in the industry has led to the democratization of access to ICT with even people of low earnings being able to afford mobile phones.”

The leading publishing firm, founded by late foremost Nationalist and elder statesman, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, enthused further: “Today, beneficiaries of his per second billing system are in every home, every village, town and city across the country. With unending innovation, Globacom has contributed immensely to the improvement of internet service providers in the country. Apart from being an astute businessman, Dr Adenuga is a philanthropist of note and has brought relief to the underprivileged in the society through his generosity.”

Interestingly, Glo started the year with the unveiling of the World Heavy Weight Champion, Anthony Joshua as its brand ambassador. Prior, Adenuga was adjudged the “Businessman of the Year” by a crack team of judges at the ‘3rd DAAR Awards’ held at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, and attended by top government functionaries and Captains of industry. That was on Saturday, 19th January. It was double honour at the same event where Globacom was voted the Best Customer Service Company of the Year.

Adenuga was singled out for the award as a result of his keen foresight for impactful and juicy investment opportunities and aptitude to succeed where others have failed. According to the citation, Globacom, a network to be reckoned with across the continent, towers high in a sector where the competition is very keen among unrelenting players, a couple of which had gone through a change of investors/managers/names to rescue them.

Profiled to be growing very fast as a result of “…several attractive and user-friendly packages which offer a lot of appeal to pre-paid and post-paid phone users, thus making its services the most accessible and most accessible,” Globacom was the first to launch the 4G LTE network nationwide, “…offering instant efficient broadband internet to millions of Nigerians at speeds that are several times faster.”

Receiving the awards, Globacom’s Regional Manager, North Central, Mr. Kemi Kaka, said the awards were a call to greater services while pledging that it would stimulate them to do more for humanity, Nigeria and Africa.

For the second consecutive year, Globacom also clinched the Independent Newspaper’s Telecommunications Company of the Year award. Organisers of the award said Globacom merited the award for being “the first telecommunications company in Nigeria to cover the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, with 4G LTE network services.”

In the words of the organisers, “Other factors which gave Globacom the prestigious award were the company’s innovative products like ‘Oga SIM’, which guarantees quality data services to the subscribers at very low rates; and Glo Yakata, which offers subscribers 2,200 per cent bonus on every recharge.” Receiving the award, which was instituted to recognise and appreciate individuals and corporate organisations that have made meaningful impacts in their endeavour and enterprise, Globacom’s Head, Enterprise Sales, Mr. Eric Uwaoma, said that awards “such as this one are a call for more commitment to the service to the people, and I want to assure all that Globacom will continue to delight its subscribers with world-class services and seamless telecommunications solutions.”

The position of Glo as a leading telecommunication giant was further consummated at the 10th anniversary of the Beacon of Information and Communication Technology (BoICT) Awards where the company was initiated into Nigeria’s ICT Hall of Fame. Glo also won the ‘Most Innovative Mobile Player of the Year’ award. The induction into the ICT Hall of Fame was for the company’s remarkable contributions to the growth of Nigeria’s telecommunications sector. It was announced at a colourful ceremony held in Lagos and attended by leaders of the nation’s ICT industry.

The chairman, Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), Mr. Gbenga Adebayo, described Globacom as an icon in the industry. Adebayo, who charted the trajectory of Nigeria’s telecommunications industry from the analogue era to the present Digital Switch Over (DOS) era, submitted that but for the innovative introduction of Per Second Billing (PSB) system introduced by Globacom, the industry would have taken longer to evolve.

While congratulating Globacom for winning the Most Innovative Mobile Player of Year award, Adebayo added;“Though Globacom came at a later date, its introduction of PSB system at a time earlier operators said it was not achievable, changed the rule of the game. For that unique innovation and many more others it has introduced since then, Globacom deserved this award.

At the #IAMBRANDNIGERIA award and gala in Lagos on Saturday, November 30th, Glo was recognised as one of the most valuable telecommunication brands in Nigeria.

The company’s global preeminence was reconfirmed when it won in the telecommunication-mobile category at the prestigious 2019 World Branding Awards, the ultimate global brand recognition accolade now in its 10th year, and which saw 318 brands from 41 countries named “Brand of the Year” in a glittering ceremony held on November 15 at the State Apartments of Kensington Palace, London. The brands were nominated by over 230,000 consumers across the globe.

Winners of the award are uniquely judged through three streams: brand valuation, consumer market research, and public online voting. Seventy per cent of the scoring process comes from consumer votes. There can only be one winner in each category per country. “The Awards are an acknowledgement to the tireless effort of the teams that build and maintain their brand presence in an ever-changing market,” said Richard Rowles, Chairman of the World Branding Forum.

“To be a winner, a brand has shown that they have built themselves up to such a degree that they are placed amongst the best brands in the world,” added Julian Andersen, Managing Director, World Branding Forum. The awards are organised by the World Branding Forum, a global non-profit organisation dedicated to advancing branding standards.

No doubt, the company has grown in leaps and bounds as the years pass by and each year sees it continue to navigate uncharted territories.
