The Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, has dismissed reports suggesting that some lawmakers are plotting to remove Senate President Godswill Akpabio, describing the claims as false, misleading, and an attempt to cause unnecessary tension within the National Assembly.
Speaking during Wednesday’s plenary, Bamidele assured that there had been no discussions, plans, or moves among senators regarding Akpabio’s removal, stressing that the upper chamber remains united and focused on addressing the nation’s challenges.
Addressing the Senate, Bamidele said the rumours were deliberately planted to destabilise the legislature and distract members from their legislative responsibilities.
He stated, “There was no attempt by any of our colleagues, nor any discussion about removing the Senate President from office.
“We are fully united and have a zero-tolerance approach to distractions because there are urgent issues of public importance that need our attention. Reports like these are clearly meant to create confusion.”
Naija News reports that the Senate Leader’s clarification followed remarks by the lawmaker representing Abia North senatorial district, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, who had referenced earlier reports of unsuccessful attempts to impeach Akpabio.
Kalu, in an interview with journalists on Tuesday, confirmed that there were attempts to impeach Akpabio.
Naija News reports that the former Governor of Abia State stressed that attempts to impeach Akpabio will not be allowed.
He said, “There were attempts, but we didn’t allow that to happen. We are one big family, and it’s not going to happen.”
Bamidele, however, reaffirmed that such insinuations were unfounded and did not reflect the mood or position of the current Senate.
