The IGP resigned in a letter today, citing family issues which require his undivided attention,” Onanuga said. Sources indicate that Egbetokun’s resignation followed a private meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where he was reportedly asked to step aside.
Tunji Disu, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Alagbon, Lagos, is expected to succeed him.
Egbetokun had been appointed Inspector-General of Police on June 19, 2023, having previously served as Deputy Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department.
He took over from Usman Alkali Baba, whose tenure concluded in September 2023 following an extension granted by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
