Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, has officially dissolved the State Executive Council.
This announcement was made on Thursday following an extraordinary session of the council, which was convened to evaluate the performance of the administration during the governor’s second term, spanning the past two and a half years.
Ibrahim Njodi, the Secretary to the State Government, spoke to the media after the meeting in Gombe.
He characterized the session as a comprehensive review of government activities and referred to it as a “postmortem” of the administration’s achievements thus far.
According to him, the government recorded strong progress across key sectors. He noted that the administration achieved “excellent results” in governance and development programmes.
Njodi explained that the decision to dissolve the cabinet came after careful consideration. He said both governance performance and the current political climate were reviewed. He added that the governor decided it was necessary to create space.
The move, he said, would allow commissioners and other appointees who have political ambitions to pursue them freely. He stressed that the action was meant to ensure fairness. It is also to provide a level playing field for those interested in contesting elections in 2027.
“As part of the governor’s directive, all commissioners are to hand over the affairs of their respective ministries to the Permanent Secretaries not later than Friday, April 10, 2026,” the SSG said.
He added that the directive goes beyond commissioners. It also affects political appointees, aides, and public servants who may be interested in elective positions.
Njodi said those currently in government service and willing to join partisan politics must resign. He stated that such resignations must be completed on or before April 10.
Governor Yahaya, who also serves as Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, expressed appreciation to the outgoing officials. He commended them for their loyalty and commitment to service.
He acknowledged their contributions to the implementation of his administration’s policies. He said the achievements recorded were a result of teamwork and dedication.
The governor also wished them well in their future plans. He gave special mention to those preparing to seek elective offices in the next election cycle.
Njodi further disclosed that the governor appreciated members of the press. He thanked journalists for their coverage of government activities in the state. He urged them to remain professional and responsible in their duties.
He also called on the media to continue supporting governance. He stressed the need for responsible reporting that promotes accountability and stability.
