Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has accused his predecessor, Sen. Ibikunle Amosun of running education aground during his years as the governor of the state.

Abiodun stated this on Saturday, at the inauguration of the new executive members of the National Association of Ogun State Students (NAOSS).

At the event, held at the NUJ Secretariat, Iwe-Iroyin, Abeokuta, Abiodun said education was nothing to write home about before he assumed office on May 29, 2019.

Apparently making veiled reference to Amosun, Abiodun said, “Primary and secondary schools were totally abandoned, while tertiary education was almost shut down.”

The Governor, who was represented at the event by his Special Assistant on Students Matters, Azeez Adeyemi, said “the crises that almost destroyed the Tai Solarin College of Education, Omu Ijebu and Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, MAPOLY, Abeokuta are still fresh in our memories.”

Adeyemi said academic activities were allegedly grounded for more than one year in the two ciatadels of learning, saying Abiodun, immediately he assumed office, made the two schools his priority.

“In no time, the crisis that bedeviled the institutions were peacefully resolved,” he added.

Speaking, the newly inaugurated National President of NAOSS, Gbemileke Ogunronbi, appreciated Gov Abiodun for “his efforts in the education sector since he came on board.”

However, Ogunronbi appealed to Abiodun to graciously heed their many requests, among which, he said, were the payment of dues, bursary and others.

Speaking on Nigerian students and their future challenges, the Guest Speaker, Hon Ifekayode Akinbode, charged youths of the nation to brace up to take over leadership positions so as to turn around the fortune of the nation.
