A former student of Lagos State University (LASU), John Chukwudi, has shared a heartbreaking story about his decision to sell his father’s house for ₦45 million to relocate to Canada.
He revealed that the dire situation in Nigeria, particularly the frustrations caused by the government’s policies and mismanagement, drove him to seek a better life abroad.
The student expressed feelings of desperation and disappointment, highlighting how the challenges of living in Nigeria made them feel that leaving was their only option.
His plea underscores the struggles faced by many young Nigerians who feel compelled to abandon their homes in search of greater opportunities and a more stable future.
After the passing of his father, he made the difficult decision to sell the family home, a beloved residence filled with memories, for a significant sum of ₦45 million.
This money was intended to serve as a foundation for a fresh start in Canada, a country he believed held greater opportunities for his future.
With high hopes and dreams, he embarked on this new journey, imagining a life free from the struggles he faced back in Nigeria.
However, as the weeks turned into months, he found himself grappling with the harsh reality of unemployment in a foreign land. A year has now passed since his arrival, and despite his diligent efforts to secure employment, he remains unemployed.
His frustration is palpable, and the sense of helplessness weighs heavily on him as he navigates the complexities of adapting to a new culture while searching for employment.
As he reflects on the tough decisions he made, the emotional toll of selling his father’s house becomes even more pronounced. He contemplates the sacrifices he endured and is faced with the bitter realization of the steep costs associated with seeking opportunities abroad, questioning whether the gamble he took was worth the outcome.
Attacking the Nigerian government, Chukwudi said: “As a graduate, I was struggling to eat, except I relied on my parent, at a point I was ashamed because everything had to come from my parents. The Nigerian government has put people under unnecessary pressure to take some drastic decisions. I left the country due to bad government nothing else.
“After I graduated from LASU in Lagos, I went back to Enugu to learn fashion deigning profession, after few years I returned back to Lagos but the most annoying thing is that I could not see a good fashion firm to get me employed, but one of my cousins whom I used to sew for told me I would be needed in Canada and I would make more money from what I am doing, I told my parents, he told us how much it will cost me and still told us how many months it will take me to recover such money back if I can take such decisions. My dad took a big gamble to sell his house in Anifowoshe and relocated back to Enugu, hoping that after one year, I should be able to buy new house for him. I am already using 13th month in Canada, I am only doing some useless jobs, unfortunately, my cousin has abandoned me.
Speaking further on how much he sold his father’s bungalow at Anifowoshe, Ikeja-Lagos, he said: “Of course my parent had planned to relocate back to Enugu due to demolition of houses in Lagos, so he took that decision when the Canada opportunity came up and hope that I will buy a bigger house in less than a year after getting to Canada. We sold the house N45,000,000 and we took N40 million to process my Canada relocation in 2024.”
There’s no bed 🛏️ of roses 🌹 anywhere in the world.
What u get is what you worked for.
So long as there’s no war in your country, do not emigrate because of unfounded tales.
Why lose hope so easily. Begin to work on your fashion design and gradually build up a clientele. Who told you success would come with a snap of your fingers? Apparently you did not confirm whether there was a challenge of availability of the type of clothing you produce, to which you can then provide a solution with your presence. That being the case, you will need to build up demand for your product and market it. Concentrate on what you can do with your hands, stop looking for paid employment solely, especially as your first degree may not be in a discipline that is very marketable. If there was a demand for your fashion products, why, you could have used 40 million Naira to start an business of export such product to Canada from Nigeria. Always good to do detailed background research before taking the Japa plunge.
Don’t relent keep pushing, you will surely make it.
That was a very candid response. Since the young man is good in fashion designing, it’s better for him to establish his own fashion designing outfit and before you know it, he’ll become well known all over the place. I sincerely wish him the very best.
Shut up ur STINKING MOUTH there is bed of roses in d western world
Stop lamenting! Stop blaming government! Now that you are still unemployed in foreign land would you blame Canada government for your misfortune? Who gave you time frame for making it in foreign land? Get prepare to fight through prayer against the powers of your father’s house that might be following you about AND WORK HARD be intentional!!!!
You still have hope at least you are there and still young. I know of a man in my area who sold his house for 15million naira to relocate to canada but never worked out. Now the family of five are managing in a rented room and parlour while the man is roaming streets and drinking up and down. But for me 40million is just too much to relocate jst an individual, when no be heaven i will rather do a few investments with such huge sum.
Nothing comes so easy,my brother! The life is not all that easy in foreign land especially in the Western world from my experience of 18years in Western world. My dear you don’t go and start making money immediately except you join the fast lane,I hope you understand what I mean. You will make it but you have to waste some years before you can get through. The system over there’s not like here in Africa coupled that you are an African.Sometimes it pays to go through course like nursing etc inorder to fix yourself in.So bear in mind that two/three years will be wasted before you can get through. The house that you sold to enable you travel must surely be replaced with much better one including achieving much more than that.Good luck, don’t worry for you must surely achieve your aim of relocating to Canada as far as you are optimistic, hopeful and industrious. Thank you.
Absolutely true. Why will I squander 40million on relocating? It tells me that the guy in question is not business Savvy

You ought to start your handwork from parts of the sales of the house rather than travelling, again, take menial jobs in Canada till you will get better ones, Rome was not built in a day, be patient small, don’t be in hurry in your life.
Before you start doing something you must start it from your door before moving to market 🧏 think before taking someone opion
Even with 20m out of that 40m you used for your travel expenses and to get your visa to Canada. You can use the 20m from it and start up a huge business that will be fetching you huge sum of money everyday. Then also use like 5 0r 10m from the remaining 20m to start a huge business from your parents in your home town. Then use the remaining money and buy a land of about 15m that’s remaining in less than 5 years that land you bought 15m must appreciate to that 45m.
Anyways nothing spoils, God will help you in Canada. You can be doing other Minnie jobs in Canada don’t wait to get huge employment there, also remember that there are other Canadian citizens that are unemployed too.
Don’t soil your hands with dirty jobs like selling of drugs and every other related jobs but you can do yahoo or aza man, my brother you go make am.
