The Interim National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, has accused the Presidency of orchestrating the deepening crisis within the Labour Party (LP) as part of a broader strategy to deny Mr. Peter Obi a viable political platform for the 2027 general elections.
Tanko said the Obidient Movement remains solidly behind Obi and is actively involved in coalition talks aimed at unseating the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
He insisted that Obi remains committed to contesting the presidency and refuted claims that the former Anambra State governor may accept a running mate position to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.…CONTINUE READING

Tanko described the crisis within the LP as “state-sponsored,” pointing fingers directly at President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Citing Tinubu’s June 12 Democracy Day address, he said: “President Tinubu himself admitted that he’s happy to see the opposition in disarray. That statement alone confirms our suspicion that the ruling government is actively fanning the flames of discord.”
He further alleged that similar tactics were being deployed against other opposition parties, with the overarching goal of destabilising potential electoral threats before 2027. “They want to create a scenario where Obi would not have any platform to run on,” Tanko said. “But we will resist that. By God’s grace, we will contest, and there will be a platform.”
Tanko dismissed speculations that Peter Obi might run as a vice-presidential candidate in a possible Atiku-Obi alliance, calling the rumour “a kite being flown to distract supporters.” He reaffirmed that Obi remains focused on running for president and is not desperate for power. “He is desperate only to fix Nigeria,” he declared.
Although the Labour Party remains Obi’s current political base, Tanko hinted that the Obidient Movement could reconsider its alignment if circumstances change. “For now, we are still in the Labour Party. If we need to change course, we will consult widely,” he said.
He also confirmed that the Obidient Movement is playing an active role in ongoing coalition talks with other opposition parties, asserting that “we cannot do it alone.” According to him, Mr. Obi is among those spearheading the initiative to create a unified front ahead of 2027.
Tanko called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to act decisively in resolving the leadership crisis within the Labour Party. “INEC has all the information and documentation. What they lack is political will. If they do what’s right, history will remember them positively,” he stated.
Assessing the performance of the Tinubu administration, Tanko criticised the government’s failure to fulfil campaign promises. He noted that instead of the three million jobs per year promised, unemployment and poverty have worsened. “There’s mass hunger, insecurity persists in states like Benue and Taraba, and inflation has made life unbearable. The government has failed on all fronts,” he concluded.
Tanko called on Nigerians to resist the manipulation of democracy and to stand behind candidates like Peter Obi who offer a genuine alternative to the current political order.
