* Bukola Olopade is not merely a leader of tournaments; he is an architect of legacies

True leaders do not govern from behind closed doors. They show up in flesh, in fire, and full-hearted presence. Some walk into power and turn it into a performance. Others bear it like a burden of love, a sacred trust. Bukola Olopade, Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), is that rarer kind.

He governs not with ego but empathy, not with command but compassion. His interventions in the name of Nigerian sports speak to something deeper, an inward flame, a calling, a profound love for the land and its youth.

Thus, on the occasion of his birthday, my heart is compelled not simply to offer felicitations but to write a tribute steeped in gratitude, rich with reverence, and the memory of all he has done, not just for a sector, but for millions of lives whose fates are tied to it.

To meet Bukola Olopade is to meet light in human form. He is a statesman whose smile disarms, whose counsel steadies, and whose energy propels. There is no artifice in his presence, no shadow in his laughter, no bureaucracy in his brotherhood. He is both General and Gentleman, Director and Defender, the custodian of a nation’s youthful dreams.

His track record gleams with distinction, before he rose to helm the NSC as its Director-General, Olopade had etched his name into the tablets of Ogun State’s sporting glory. As the Honourable Commissioner for Youth and Sports under Governor Gbenga Daniel’s administration, he brought freshness and fervour, raising Ogun’s profile in national competitions while building systems that endured. He was a commissioner who did not merely occupy a portfolio, he gave it soul, structure, and spirit.

From those early days till now, Bukola Olopade has remained true to form: present, passionate, and prophetic in his vision. Few things humble a man more than generosity freely given. I speak now as one who was touched by the kindness of Olopade.

When the vision of the Southwest Games took seed in my mind, I did not know how the roots would find water, nor how the dream would find air. I only knew that the flame must be kindled. Then came Olopade, unprompted, unforced, unfaltering.

He gave not only the weight of his office but the warmth of his person. He opened his door and his heart, listening attentively, respectfully, and supporting with love. He endorsed the project with such enthusiasm that my own doubts began to melt. He offered his office, his time, his voice. He hosted me not like a colleague but like kin.

His support was full, fearless, fatherly. I could not have asked for more. I could not have dreamt of better. In those moments of uncertainty, he became a steadying force, an encouraging wind. And in all the chaos of planning and execution, he never once withdrew his shoulder from the plough. I remain awed. I remain grateful. I remain indebted.

Bukola Olopade is not merely a leader of tournaments; he is an architect of legacies. His role in birthing and growing the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon is one such legacy. Today, the marathon stands as one of Africa’s most prominent races, drawing elite athletes, corporate giants, and thousands of everyday Nigerians. Yet behind that spectacle stands the vision of one man, firm, faithful, and innovative.

Under his stewardship as Director-General, the National Sports Commission has blossomed in ways few imagined. The 2024 National Sports Festival in Ogun State bore his signature brilliance. It was more than a competition; it was a celebration of unity, discipline, and national pride.

He has also overseen the Youth Athletics Development Tour, the National Para Games, and the Revival of the National Schools Sports Festival. These events have not merely happened, they have flourished. They have birthed new stars, rekindled old dreams, and reaffirmed Nigeria’s place on the continental sporting map.

Olopade’s commitment to women’s inclusion in sports has been particularly stirring. The Ogun Women Run, championed under his guidance, has become a powerful symbol of gender empowerment and athletic pride. He sees women not as participants but as pioneers, not as afterthoughts but as architects of a new sporting future.

At the grassroots, his touch is unmistakable. His programmes in secondary schools, local government councils, and underserved communities have reawakened the slumbering genius of young Nigerians. He funds. He visits. He cheers. He believes. And belief, when given by a man in power, can change a life forever.

Bukola Olopade is no mere bureaucrat. He is a patriot of the old school, a believer in the redemptive power of the Nigerian spirit. He speaks softly, but his ideas ring loudly. He wears humility like a second skin, yet his impact booms like thunder across the fields of sport, across the citadels of youth engagement, across the chambers of national discourse.

There is an ancient dignity in his bearing, the kind found in men who do not need to announce their presence because their deeds precede them. He is a mirror of honour in a world flooded with ambition; a man who walks slowly not out of weakness, but out of a desire to walk with others.

Olopade’s birthday, therefore, is not just a date on the calendar. It offers a call to national gratitude. Nigeria must pause, must look, must clap with sincerity. For here stands a man who has given his life not to spectacle but to substance.

The sports sector owes him more than medals; it owes him memory. The youth circuits of this nation must speak his name with reverence, for giving them wings with which they could fly. The civil service may look to his style, for it is proof that public service can still be very noble.

Today, I honour a man of appreciable age and timeless value. May the road before him lengthen in joy. May the burdens behind him lessen in glory. May the fields he has watered grow gardens that bloom for generations.

Bukola Olopade, Director-General of the National Sports Commission, is a gift of goodwill wrapped in the grace of a human form. A bridge between dreams and deliverance. A lamp lit by service, carried by love, fuelled by faith.

As the sun rises on this new age of his life, may the heavens reward him with strength for the miles yet to come. And may we, his brothers, colleagues, friends, and fellow citizens, never forget that we walked alongside greatness.

Happy birthday, sir.

We see you. We thank you. We celebrate you.
