A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Sani, has spoken on the ongoing political tension in Rivers State and the debate surrounding the future of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Naija News reports that Sani addressed the issue during an interview on Symfoni TV while discussing internal matters within the PDP and the growing public interest in the relationship between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and his successor, Governor Fubara.
The political analyst said Wike has made it clear that he does not want to be asked whether the Rivers State governor will seek a second term in office.
According to Sani, the former governor has decided not to discuss the matter publicly.
Sani explained that Wike’s position appears to be a way of avoiding early political arguments within the party.
He said discussions about re-election or succession can easily create confusion among supporters.
He noted that when political figures start talking about future candidates long before official party activities begin, it can lead to tension among members.
Supporters may begin to read different meanings into statements, leading to disagreements and weakening unity within the party.
Sani said that leaders in political parties often prefer to wait until the time for primaries or candidate selection before speaking about possible contenders.
He said: “Wike recently told me that nobody should ask him whether Fubara is going to do a second term or not. This is to avoid premature debates that can scatter the party. For now, the people of Rivers State are watching closely, hoping that this political “robasese” does not stop the development of the state. Wike is keeping his cards close to his chest.”
