Motorists across Nigeria have been advised to ensure they possess all necessary vehicle documents and safety items to avoid penalties during routine checks by enforcement agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO).
The directive comes amid increased road surveillance and enforcement operations nationwide.
Required Documents for Drivers
According to standard enforcement requirements, drivers are expected to present the following documents when requested:
Valid Driver’s Licence
Vehicle Licence (displayed on the windscreen)
Proof of Ownership Certificate
Certificate of Road Worthiness
Insurance Certificate
Allocation of Registration Number
Change of Ownership (for used vehicles)
Additional documents such as the Electronic Central Motor Registry (ECMR) and Tinted Glass Permit are currently not strictly enforced. However, authorities advise motorists to regularise them when necessary.
Drivers are also cautioned against carrying original copies of these documents, with officials recommending the use of photocopies for daily movement.
FRSC Safety Requirements
In addition to documentation, the FRSC mandates the presence of basic safety equipment in vehicles. These include:
Fire extinguisher
Caution sign
Spare tyre (in good condition)
Jack and wheel spanner
First aid kit
Officials note that failure to provide these items during inspection may attract sanctions.
Vehicle Inspection Checks
Both the FRSC and VIO officers also conduct physical inspections of vehicles to ensure roadworthiness. Areas of focus include:
Headlights
Indicators (front and rear)
Brake lights
Hazard lights
Reverse lights
Parking lights
Windscreen condition (no cracks)
Side mirrors
Horn audibility (minimum of 60 metres)
Seat belts
Tyre condition
Authorities emphasize that compliance is mandatory, stressing that ignorance of traffic regulations will not be accepted as an excuse.
Motorists are therefore urged to ensure full compliance to guarantee safety and avoid unnecessary fines or delays on the road.
