Presidency to Ministers: Prepare To Leave Office If You’re Under-Score In Your Performance
As President Bola Tinubu’s administration marks its second anniversary on May 29, a comprehensive review of ministerial performance is underway, sources in the Presidency have confirmed.
The Central Results Delivery and Coordination Unit (CDCU), led by Hadiza Bala-Usman, is finalising a fresh set of scorecards evaluating ministers’ output in the first quarter of 2025; The assessment, compiled through project evidence submitted by ministries, is expected on the President’s desk any moment. …CONTINUE READING
This development comes amid growing public and opposition pressure over poor governance, insecurity, and economic hardship; While some ministers reportedly performed fairly, insiders say many scored below average on key performance indicators; Ministries of education, health, and security were flagged for underperformance.
President Tinubu had earlier declared that ministers would retain their roles based on merit, stressing, “If no performance, you leave us.” His October 2024 cabinet reshuffle followed an earlier CDCU report that identified underperforming ministers.
Civil society groups and opposition parties, including the PDP, NNPP, and LP, have urged the President to act swiftly, with calls for further cabinet reshuffles; Critics argue that many ministers are more focused on 2027 political positioning than governance.
The CDCU’s report is expected to shape Tinubu’s next round of engagements with ministers and guide future appointments; Observers have also called for the public release of the performance data to foster transparency and accountability.
Although no immediate sackings are anticipated, the report marks a critical moment in Tinubu’s presidency as he seeks to recalibrate his cabinet for the challenges ahead.
